Homework
Second grade is an important year! Besides learning so many new things, your child will become a more independent and responsible student. Each student will be responsible for recording his/her own homework in their agenda each day.
Math: There will be math homework assigned Monday through Thursday.
**This year students will be using IXL and Reflex math. IXL is a web-based program that targets Math with problems based on the Common Core standards. If a student does not complete his/her IXL assignment(s) by Friday, he/she will be asked to complete it over the weekend by Monday. Most students will be able to complete these during class time. Reflex is an online math fluency website which helps students master their addition and subtraction facts, and eventually begin to work work on multiplication and division. Reflex will be used in class at least 3 times per week. Students may work on it at home as well.
Reading: It is an expectation that students read nightly.
**Please let your child read to you. This allows them to build vocabulary, learn new words that they haven’t seen before, become efficient and fluent at reading and help build their confidence. If a book is too difficult for your child to read, then please read it to them. Children love listening to adults read. They benefit greatly from you modeling a read aloud and can enjoy books which are too difficult for them to read by themselves. Most importantly, try to make this an enjoyable and relaxing time together. Please make this a regular part of your child’s routine at whatever time works best for you. Let’s make reading fun and build a love of learning in your child!
Optional Homework: Your child will have access to many web-based programs and applications such as Reflex, Sumdog, and Compass Learning. He/she can use these to practice math and/or reading at any time throughout the year.
